Scope
This Advanced Fire Fighting course covers the mandatory competences and
the required knowledge understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/3, Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of thirty-six (36) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competencies on Advanced Fire Fighting
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must:
- control firefighting operations aboard ships;
- organize and train fire parties;
- inspect and service fire detection and fire extinguishing systems and equipment and; and
- investigate and compile reports on fire incidents.
Scope
This Refresher Course on Advanced Fire Fighting aims to meet the requirement in paragraph 5 of Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code which states that
“seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 4 in advance fire-fighting shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained
the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of Table A-VI/3.”
This requires a total of ten (10) instructional hours to cover the subject areas enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
Upon completion of this training course, the trainee shall fulfill the requirements in Section A-VI/3 paragraph 5 and 6 of the STCW Code.
Upon successful completion of this course, seafarers must be able to:
- control fire-fighting operations aboard ships;
- organize and train fire parties;
- inspect and service fire detection and fire extinguishing systems and equipment; and
- investigate and compile reports on fire incidents.
Scope
This Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course covers the mandatory competences and required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of sixteen (16) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B- Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainees must be able to;
- Minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire; and
- Fight and extinguish fires.
Scope
This Elementary First Aid course covers the mandatory competences and required knowledge, understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-3 of the STCW Code.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competence in Elementary First Aid.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency.
Scope
This Personal Survival Techniques course covers the mandatory competences and required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of sixteen (16) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B- Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competence on Personal Survival Technique.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.
Scope
This Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-Vl/1, Table A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of sixteen (16) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B – Course Outline
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all seafarers assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-Vl/1 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences on Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:
- comply with emergency procedures;
- take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment;
- observe safe working practices;
- understand orders and be understood in relation to shipboard duties; and
- contribute to effective human relationships on board ship
Scope
This Refresher Course on Basic Training aims to meet the requirement in paragraph 3 of Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code which states that “seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 2 in basic training shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of Table A-VI/1-1 and A-VI/1-2.”
Training Outcomes
Upon the completion of this training course, the trainee shall fulfill the requirements in Section A-VI/1 paragraphs 3 and 4 of the STCW code.
In view of the acceptance of onboard training and experience as a means for maintaining the required standards of competence, seafarers must be able to demonstrate the following competences upon successful completion of this course;
Personal Survival Techniques
- don and use an immersion suit;
- safely jump from a height into the water;
- swim while wearing a lifejacket;
- right an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket;
- board a survival craft from water while wearing a lifejacket; and
- keep afloat without a lifejacket
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
- use various types of portable fire extinguisher;
- extinguish small fires, e.g., electrical fires, oil fires, propane fires;
- extinguish extensive fires with water using jet and spray nozzles;
- extinguish fire with foam, powder or any other suitable chemical agent
- enter and pass through, with life line but without breathing apparatus, a compartment into which high-expansion foam has been injected;
- fight fire in smoke-filled enclosed spaces wearing self-contained breathing apparatus;
- extinguish fire with water fog or any other suitable fire-fighting agent in an accommodation room or simulated engine-room with fire and heavy smoke; and
- extinguish oil fire with fog applicator and spray nozzles, dry chemical powder or foam applicators.
Scope
This Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other than Fast Rescue Boats course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/2, Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of thirty-two (32) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/2 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other than Fast Rescue Boats.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:
- take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch;
- operate a survival craft engine;
- manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship;
- use locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and pyrotechnics; and
- apply first aid to survivors.
Scope
This Refresher Course on Survival Craft and Fast Rescue Boat other than Fast Rescue Boats aims to meet the requirement in paragraph 5 of Section A-VI/2
which states that “seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 4 in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats shall be required,
every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed
in column 1 of Table A-VI/2-1.”
This requires a total of eight (8) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
Upon completion of this training course, the trainee shall fulfill the requirements in Section A-VI/2 paragraphs 5 and 6 of the STCW Code.
In view of the acceptance of onboard training and experience as a means for maintaining the required standards of competence, seafarers must be able to demonstrate the following competences upon successful completion of this course:
- right an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket;
- start and operate an inboard engine fitted in an open or enclosed lifeboat; and
- use signaling equipment, including pyrotechnics.
Scope
This Fast Rescue Boats (FRB) course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge, understanding
and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/2, Table A-VI/2-2 of the STCW Code.
This course requires a total of twenty-eight (28) Instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/2 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences in Fast Rescue Boats (FRB).
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:
- understand the construction, maintenance, repair and outfitting of fast rescue boats;
- take charge of the launching equipment and appliance as commonly fitted, during launching and recovery;
- take charge of a fast rescue boat during launching and recovery;
- take charge of a fast rescue boat after launching; and
- operate a fast rescue boat engine.
Scope
This Refresher Course on Fast Rescue Boataims to meet the requirement in paragraph 11 of Section A-VI/2 which states that
“seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 10 in fast rescue boats shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence
of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of Table A-VI/2-2.”
This course requires a total of eight (8) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
Upon completion of this training course, the trainee shall fulfill the requirements in Section A-VI/2 paragraphs 11 and 12of the STCW Code.
In view of the acceptance of onboard training and experience as a means for maintaining the required standards of competence, seafarers must be able to demonstrate the following competences upon successful completion of this course:
- take charge of a fast rescue boat as commonly fitted during launching and recovery; and
- take charge of a fast rescue boat after launching
Scope
This Security Awareness Training and Seafarers with Designated Security Duties course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-VI/6, Table A-VI/6-1 and Table VI/6-2 of the STCW code.
This course requires a total of eight (8) hours instructional hour to cover the topics enumerated in Part B-Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all the trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/6 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences on Security Awareness Training and Seafarers with Designated Security Duties.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainees must be able to:
- Table A-VI/6-1: Security Awareness
- contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness;
- recognize of security threats; and
- understand the need for and methods of maintaining security awareness and vigilance.
- Table VI/6-2 Seafarers with Designated Security Duties
- maintain the conditions set out in a ship security plan;
- recognize of security risk and threats;
- undertake regular security inspections of the ship; and
- use of security equipment and systems properly.
Scope
This Medical First Aid (MEFA) course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge, understanding and proficiencies
prescribed in Section A-VI/4, Table A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of thirty-two (32) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competence on Medical First Aid.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board.
Scope
This Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-ll/4, Table A-ll/4 of the STCW Code.
This course requires a total of forty (40) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B – Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-ll/4 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competence as Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainees must be able to:
- steer the ship and also comply with the helm orders in the English language;
- keep a proper look-out by sight and hearing;
- contribute to monitoring and controlling a safe watch; and
- operate emergency equipment and apply emergency procedures.
Scope
This Ratings Forming Part of a Watch in a Manned Engine-room or designated to perform duties in a Periodically Unmanned Engine-room
course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge, understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-III/4,
Table A-III/4 of the STCW Code.
This course requires a total of forty (40) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B - Course Outline.
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-III/4 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences as Ratings Forming Part of a Watch in a Manned Engine-room or designated to perform duties in a Periodically Unmanned Engine-room.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:
- carry out a watch routine appropriate to the duties of a rating forming part of an engine-room watch;
- understand orders and be understood in matters relevant to watchkeeping duties;
- for keeping a boiler watch: maintain the correct water levels and steam pressures; and
- operate emergency equipment and apply emergency procedures.
Scope
This Passenger Ship Crisis Management and Human Behaviour Training course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-V/2 paragraph 4, Table A-V/2-2 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of sixteen (16) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B – Course Outline.

To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-V/2 paragraph 4 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences on Passenger Ship Crisis Management and Human Behaviour Training.

- organize shipboard emergency procedures;
- optimize the use of resources;
- control response to emergencies;
- control passengers and other personnel during emergency situations; and
- establish and maintain effective communications.

This Passenger Ship Crowd Management Training course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-V/2 paragraph 3, Table A-V/2-1 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of ten (10) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B – Course Outline
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-V/2 paragraph 3 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the competences in Passenger Ship Crowd Management Training.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:
- contribute to the implementation of shipboard emergency plans and procedures to muster and evacuate passengers; and
- assist passengers en route to muster and embarkation stations.

This Safety Training for Personnel Providing Direct Service to Passengers in Passenger Spaces course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge,
understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-V/2 paragraph 2 of the STCW Code.
This requires a total of six (6) instructional hours to cover the topics enumerated in Part B – Course Outline
Training Outcomes
To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-V/2 paragraph 2 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the following competences in Safety Training for Personnel Providing Direct Service to Passengers in Passenger Spaces.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:
- communicate with crew and passengers during an emergency;
- demonstrate to passengers the use of personal life-saving appliances; and
- explain the procedures in embarking and disembarking passengers with special attention to persons with disabilities and persons needing special assistance.
